This week is refugee week and here at Gunnersbury Park & Museum, we would like to take the opportunity to share with you some amazing local talent from the refugee community.
The first video is by Amir Darwish. Amir is a British/Syrian poet of Kurdish origin and came to the UK as an asylum seeker in 2003. The poems in the video speak about Syrian refugees' agony, pain and the journey of death they took and still take to find safety. The Syrian poetry scene has never seen something like this before. Nowadays, Syrian poets write to demonstrate they are alive while death is everywhere around them.
It is a statement.
If you would like to find out more about Amir and his works, you can find him on twitter @darwish_amir and he has also published a book of his poems - 'Dear Refugee, poems by Amir Darwish'.
Our second video celebrating refugee week is by local artist Noorhan Yousef. In this video, Noorhan shares her passion and talent in painting and also a little about herself.
Our third video for Refugee Week is by Suliman Othman, founder of Hikayetna: Our Story, a community initiative to celebrate refugee art.
