A Victorian Child’s Christmas

Enjoy the Christmas festivities as a Victorian child!

This workshop is a wonderful seasonal treat, designed to be both informative and fun.

Pupils will investigate the origins of many of our Christmas traditions, including why we decorate Christmas trees, send Christmas cards and sing carols. They will also be able to handle original and replica Victorian toys and play traditional Victorian parlour games, including a fantastic shadow buff show.

Christmas Below Stairs

Led by two costumed characters – a Victorian kitchen maid and a Housekeeper or Butler – this seasonal session follows a similar structure to “Below Stairs”. Children will be dressed as maids and footmen and put to work as domestic servants.

In addition, this seasonal session provides the opportunity to stir the Christmas pudding and discover many Victorian Christmas traditions. Why do we put three spices into the mince pies? What is Lamb’s Wool? And who are the Lord and Lady of Misrule? The kitchens will be decked with holly and ivy to put you in the Christmas spirit!
